§ 27. Mr. Medlandasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that on 1st May 6,500 vehicles were available for export but only 3,271 were sent; that the failure to export these vehicles was due to lack of shipping space to South Africa; if he will undertake to make available enough shipping space to clear the docks at once; and why the ships have not been available to further this branch of our export trade.
§ Mr. Barnes:There has been difficulty in shipping all the motor cars that have come forward for shipment during the last month or so because the greater proportion of them are tendered for shipment unboxed. Present conditions limit the number of cars which can be so shipped. I am discussing the problems involved with the shipping lines and the motor manufacturers, and hope that a solution will be found which will prevent any material delay in shipments. So far as South Africa is concerned, 729 passenger cars were shipped from this country during April and at the end of the month 133 cars were registered as awaiting shipment.
