§ Major Beamishasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of the recurrent grant, excluding the medical grant, was spent by the universities in the last financial year; and what recurrent grant, excluding the medical grant, will be available for the universities to spend in this financial year and the next financial year.
§ Mr. Dalton:Recurrent grants to university institutions are made in respect 21W of the academic year ending 31st July. Excluding the grants for medical education, those so far approved for the academic year 1945–46 amount to £3,739,350. It is not possible to say how much of these grants had been spent by the universities by 31st March, 1946. The amount provided in the Civil Estimates for 1946 for these recurrent grants is £4,150,000, in addition to which a sum of £1,200,000 has been revoted. I cannot yet say what recurrent grants will be provided in the financial year 1947–48.
