HC Deb 01 May 1946 vol 422 cc22-3W
Mr. King

asked the Minister of Food what steps he proposes to take with regard to the sale of pilchards bought at Mevagissey at 2S. a stone for bait and sold in Newlyn at 6s. a stone.

Sir B. Smith:

A sale of pilchards for bait at 6s. per stone would infringe the Fish Maximum Prices Order. No reports of such dealings have reached my Depart- ment, but, if my hon. Friend will send me details, I will have the matter investigated.

Mr. King

asked the Minister of Food if the operations of U.N.R.R.A. in the purchase of pilchards at Mevagissey are likely to continue or what other buying agency he proposes to set up in order to ensure that there is a ready market for surplus fish caught

Sir B. Smith:

U.N.R.R.A. has given notice that it will not be able to accept cured pilchards delivered after 30th November next; I am at present considering other means of marketing the surplus pilchard catch after that date.
