HC Deb 20 March 1946 vol 420 c372W
Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will prohibit the importation of all caged birds particularly canaries and budgerigars, owing to the cruelty involved in keeping such birds in small cages and the shortage of adequate food for them in this country.

Mr. Belcher

The imports of caged birds at the present time are insignificant. There have been no imports of budgerigars. I do not feel justified, in view of the value placed on caged birds as pets by certain members of the public, entirely to prohibit the importation of them into this country
