Mr. Peter Freemanasked the Minister of Town and Country Planning whether, in his recommendation to local 336W authorities advocating increased tree planting, he will also recommend that suitable fruit trees be grown along all country roads and other similar open spaces to increase the food supply in this country.
§ Mr. SilkinNo, Sir. The circular which I propose to issue to local authorities about roadside tree planting is confined to the improvement of urban areas by incorporating trees in the design and layout of roads. Species of fruit bearing trees suitable for planting in roads and streets are few in number and other difficulties, such as maintenance and preservation of the fruit from theft, would prevent the extensive planting of such trees.
