HC Deb 04 March 1946 vol 420 cc10-1W
100. Mr. Gilzean

asked the Minister of War Transport if he is aware of the unsatisfactory working of the regulations governing the sale of secondhand motorcars; and what steps he proposes to take to bring about a more satisfactory state of affairs.

Mr. Barnes

I am not aware of any regulations on this matter which my hon. Friend can have in mind; but under Section 8 of the Road Traffic Act, 1934, it is an offence to sell a motor vehicle in such a condition that its use would be unlawful under the provisions of Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, unless the seller can show that he had reasonable cause to believe that the vehicle would not be used on a road in Great Britain until it had been put into a condition in which it could lawfully be so used.
