asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of burglaries in Greater London areas in the six months ended 31st January last; and the number of convictions obtained in the courts in respect of such offences.

Mr. Ede:

Statistics for January are not yet available. Four thousand one hundred and eighty-two burglaries and house-breakings were reported in the Metropolitan police district during the six months ended 31st December last. The number of convictions is not available, but 778 cases were cleared up.

Mr. Scott-Elliot

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of crimes committed in the Metropolitan police area during the years 1937, 1938, 1944 and 1945; and the percentage of crimes detected in each of those years.

Mr. Ede:

The numbers of indictable crimes reported in the Metropolitan police district during the four years in question were 92,192, 95,280, 103,804 and 128,954. The percentages cleared up in those years were 28.2, 27.1, 28.9 and 24.6.
