HC Deb 21 February 1946 vol 419 cc279-80W
Mr. Studholme

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether in view of the continued escapes from Dartmoor Prison, he will take steps to increase the supervision of the boys at this institution.

Mr. Ede:

As I explained in reply to questions on 24th January, the risk of escape cannot be eliminated in an institution in which the special system of Borstal training is carried on. The Prison Commissioners are, however, anxious that the risk should be minimised as much as possible, and, though the number of escapes from the Institution at Dartmoor is not exceptional as compared with other Borstal Institutions, they are giving careful consideration to the question whether any further steps, as regards supervision or otherwise, are required.
