HC Deb 14 February 1946 vol 419 c156W
Colonel Stoddart-Scott

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that aeroplanes in transit to and from South America, on arrival at Bathurst in Gambia, land on a wire netting landing ground; and, as this is not calculated to enhance the prestige of British aviation, if a final decision as regards the site for an up-to-date airfield will be expedited.

Mr. George Hall

I am informed that the main runway at Yundum airfield in the Gambia, which is a Royal Air Force airfield, is covered with steel planking, and that the subsidiary runway is covered with wire netting. As regards the latter part of the Question, I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the answer which I gave him on 28th November last; the several problems connected with the provision of an up-to-date airfield in the Gambia are still under consideration. In the meantime, I am given to understand that the trunk air route to South America can be accommodated at Yundum for the next two years, once certain improvements which are being made have been effected.
