HC Deb 09 December 1946 vol 431 cc169-70W
85. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Food why sheep are brought to Congleton from considerable distances, incurring loss of weight in transit, when sheep from neighbouring farms presented at the grading centre are supplied to cover local requirements; and if he will go into this matter further.

Dr. Edith Summerskill

Sheep purchased at Congleton collecting centre are normally slaughtered at Congleton slaughterhouse to meet local requirements. Exceptionally, in order to make the fullest use of the slaughtering capacity available and to meet the butchers' requirements, sheep must be brought in from centres operating on other days, even though this entails moving them some distance.
