102. Mr. Hector Huģhes

asked the Minister of Food what steps he has taken, either alone, or in consultation with the Minister of War Transport, to secure a better distribution of fish especially to inland places and to prevent waste in time of plenty, and scarcity at other times, of this food.

stores, but the long term development of quick freezing with a view to the objectives suggested by my hon. and learned Friend is being considered.

Dr. Summerskill:

My right hon. Friend, in consultation with the Minister of Transport, ended the white fish zoning scheme on 2nd March last and thus allowed the trade to distribute surplus fish from any port or market to any part of the country. He decided, however, to retain the minimum quantity scheme of distribution which ensures a supply to every trader and every area at times of relative shortage. The railway companies have been instructed by the Minister of Transport to make every effort to provide whatever facilities are necessary for the transport of fish, and. following the heavy landings of the last few weeks, many additional trains have been run. My right hon. Friend will continue to consult the Minister of Transport on other practicable steps to speed up the movement of fish.
