asked the Minister of Labour whether he will state, by trades, the number of building trades operatives now employed in the city of Portsmouth and the number of those unemployed.

Mr. Isaacs:

The latest available figures showing the numbers of insured persons employed in the building industry in Portsmouth are those for July, 1945, which I supplied to my hon. and gallant Friend in reply to his Question on 13th December. The table below shows the number of unemployed insured persons in the building industry on the registers of Portsmouth Employment Exchange and Juvenile Employment Bureau at nth February, the latest date for which figures are at present available.

Men aged 18 and under 65:

Carpenters, joiners, 1; bricklayers, 0; masons, 0; slaters, tilers (roof), 0; plasterers, 1; painters, decorators, etc., 1; plumbers, gas fitters, etc., 1; labourers, 32; all other occupations, 11.

Youths and boys: 11.

Women and girls: 0.

Total: 58.
