Mr. Vane

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the total annual cost of the British Council Centre in Tangier; what are its main activities; whether any further expansion is contemplated; what is the size of the staff employed, whole-time or part-tune; and what is the total amount of their annual salaries.

Mr. McNeil:

The British Centre in Tangier has never been the responsibility of the British Council. Until 31st March it was ',.he responsibility of the Ministry of Information and this responsibility has now passed to the Foreign Office. The Centre remains under the supervision of His Majesty's Consul-General. The total annual expenditure is £2,920

The Centre's main activities are: window displays; reference and lending library: books in French, Spanish and English are provided; reading room; film shows; English lessons. I am informed that the Centre receives about a hundred visitors daily. The staff, including watchmen, messengers and cleaner, numbers seven full time and one part time. The total amount of their salaries is £2,000 per annum. No further expansion is contemplated.
