HC Deb 04 April 1946 vol 421 cc229-30W
75. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that an old-age pensioner, of whose name and address he has been informed, sent 7s. 6d. last November to the Reconditioned Boot Company, Campfield, Deansgate, Manchester, and has not yet received the goods then ordered; whether any police investigation has been made into the methods of this company and with what result

Mr. Ede:

Yes, Sir. I understand that this is one of a number of cases in which similar complaints have been made to the Manchester police, and the police have had occasion to visit the premises of the company several times in connection with such complaints. The police have made careful investigation but while the business methods of this company are clearly unsatisfactory, I am informed that the evidence available up to the present time is not such as would enable criminal proceedings to be brought.
