HC Deb 09 October 1945 vol 414 cc94-5W
Sir E. Graham-Little

asked the Minister of Labour if, in view of the present serious shortage of schoolteachers, he will consider permitting men, whose courses have been interrupted during the war and who now need only one year of training to become qualified teachers, to return to college immediately to complete their training.

Mr. Isaacs

As regards release from the Forces, Arts students who hold scholarships at Universities and who are in release groups 1 to 49 inclusive, are being released on nomination by the Universities to enable them to resume their studies. This arrangement includes students who intend to become school teachers. I am in communication with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Education regarding the question of extending the arrangement to cover other University students in release groups 1 to 49 who do not at present qualify for release because they do not hold scholarships but who require further training in order to become school-teachers.
