HC Deb 27 November 1945 vol 416 c1248W
Mr. J. L. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for War why, in view of the fall in the purchasing power of the lira since the exchange rate for military personnel in Italy was fixed at 400 lira to the £sterling, no change has been made in this rate.

Mr. Lawson

The rate of exchange is now primarily the responsibility of the Italian Government. His Majesty's Government have refrained from demanding a more favourable rate for our troops because they desire to do nothing which might tend to make more difficult the task of the Italian Government in dealing with the present serious economic condition in Italy.
