HC Deb 12 November 1945 vol 415 c1875W
Flying-Officer Bowden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the refund of Income Tax paid by temporary civil servants in the weeks prior to Pay-as-you-Earn is to be made; and what steps temporary civil servants should take to claim this refund of tax.

Mr. Dalton

I assume that my hon. Friend has in mind the undertaking given on 17th February, 1944, in the course of the Debates on the Income Tax (Offices and Employments) Bill that a cash payment would be made to certain temporary Crown Servants where two conditions were satisfied (a) that there had been an overlapping Income Tax payment, and (b) that the introduction of Pay-as-you-Earn had involved the withdrawal of the expected tax holiday on leaving Crown Service. A statement explaining the arrangements which are being made to give effect to this undertaking was circulated in the Official Report of 14th June last, and I am sending a copy of that statement to my hon. Friend.
