Sir R. Glyn

asked the Minister of Works what are the terms on which disabled ex-Servicemen are engaged by his Ministry to act as liftmen and similar suitable work in Government Departments; whether any alterations in the conditions of service have been made since 1920; and whether the rates of pay are in all cases fixed in accordance with the trade union rates.

Disabled ex-Servicemen and men disabled in the Ministry's employment are employed as liftmen and on other suitable work on the normal conditions applicable to other Government industrial staff; since 1920 paid leave consisting of six days' annual leave and six public holidays which was formerly granted after a year's service has been allowed in the first year and a deduction from pay of 6d. per week in respect of paid leave and other privileges, including eligibility for a gratuity on retirement in accordance with the Superannuation Act, 1887, has been abolished; the rates of pay are settled by the Miscellaneous Trade Joint Council for Government Industrial Establishments.
