§ Mr. Gammansasked the Secretary of State for War how many officers and other ranks are at S.E.A.C. H.Q.; and how many hotels, offices and private houses have been requisitioned for their occupation in Singapore and other parts of Malaya.
§ Mr. LawsonOn 1st December there were 698 officers and other ranks at this Headquarters, including Dominion and Indian personnel. It has been necessary to refer to S.E.A.C. for the information requested in the second part of the Question. I will write to the hon. Member when it is received.
§ Mr. Gammansasked the Secretary of State for War what was the cost of the removal of S.E.A.C. H.Q. from Ceylon to Singapore; and if it is proposed that they should remain at Singapore.
§ Mr. LawsonThe immediate cost of the move of the S.E.A.C. group of Headquarters to Singapore is estimated at some £330,000. About two-thirds of this, however, represents repair of Government property in Singapore, which would have been necessary in any case. The cost of hiring extra accommodation is not included. There will be a set-off by the relinquishment of accommodation in Ceylon which will be available for other purposes. It is intended that S.E.A.C. Headquarters should remain at Singapore.
