HC Deb 08 March 1944 vol 397 c2070W
Mr. Viant

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that candidates for a commission in the W.R.N.S. are asked the following questions, "What is your father?" "Who are your bankers?" "What was your school and who recommended you?" and will he state the purpose of such questions.

Mr. Alexander

I am assured that such questions are not put to candidates for commission in the W.R.N.S. In the W.R.N.S. as in the Royal Navy, advancement in the Service is by ability and character.
