HC Deb 21 December 1944 vol 406 cc1987-8W
Wing-Commander Errington

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the footwear for children in the borough of Bootle is only of poor quality and, in view of the recent wet weather, there has been a considerable amount of absenteeism due to this fact; and whether he will make arrangements to improve the quality and quantity of footwear for children in this area.

Mr. Dalton

As the House knows, I am doing all I can to increase the production of good quality shoes for children. The best leather must, however, be reserved for the Services, and this sets severe limits to what can be done. I am having an inquiry made into supplies in Bootle.

Major Cox

asked the President of the Board of Trade if adequate supplies of children's shoes are now available for purchase in the Stalybridge, Dukinfield and Hyde area, and in the London district.

Mr. Dalton

I am not aware of any shortage of children's shoes in these areas, but, if my hon. and gallant Friend has had any complaints and will let me have details, I shall be glad to investigate them.
