HC Deb 21 September 1943 vol 392 cc48-9W
Squadron-Leader Fleming

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that nurses in voluntary hospitals have to provide themselves with ward shoes and special uniform stockings which may only be worn when on duty; and whether he will consider the grant of specific coupons for these articles of uniform?

Mr. Dalton

Voluntary hospital nurses receive coupon-free an initial outfit including dresses or overalls, aprons and caps, up to the value of 94 coupons, and annual replacements up to the value of 28 coupons. In return for this they are asked to refund during the present rationing period only six coupons to offset the benefit of receiving this clothing. In view of these substantial concessions, I am afraid I cannot adopt my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion.
