HC Deb 21 September 1943 vol 392 c48W
Mr. Mainwaring

asked the right hon. and gallant Member for Rye, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, what areas within the county of Glamorgan are scheduled as suitable for the development of afforestation; upon what date was the last inspection for this purpose carried out; and what plans are being contemplated to give effect to the decisions?

Sir G. Courthope

A rough assessment made in 1941 indicated that there are approximately 100,000 acres in Glamorgan suitable for timber production. Of that area 40,000 acres are or have recently been woodlands or plantations and 70,000 acres bare ground. The Forestry Commissioners have approximately 8,000 acres awaiting afforestation. The Commissioners' Report on Post-War Forest Policy recommends a large extension of afforestation in which Glamorgan should participate, but the proposals have not been allocated on a county basis.
