HC Deb 20 October 1943 vol 392 c1389W
Captain P. Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any further statement about working conditions at the Marampa mines in Sierra Leone; and whether adequate powers exist for Government inspection?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

The officer of the Labour Department who has paid several visits of inspection during the past few months has been favourably impressed by the relations between employers and employees. The men have been encouraged to organise unions and the general atmosphere was considered by him as favourable. As regards the last part of the Question, attention was drawn some time ago to the fact that the Sierra Leone Government lacked adequate legal power to enforce compliance should it ever be found necessary to do so, with requests for safety precautions in certain cases. Steps are being taken to remedy this technical defect.
