HC Deb 13 October 1943 vol 392 c904W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make a statement on the new Advisory Committee on Economic Development and Social Welfare set up in Nigeria to deal with post-war development; and why he has adopted this in substitution for the detailed and expert work of a development and welfare commission, similar to that of the Stockdale Commission?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

Yes, Sir. The committee, which is under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary and includes the heads of the technical departments and two African and one European unofficial members, has been set up by the Nigeria Government to co-ordinate the planning of post-war development in Nigeria itself. It is in no way a substitute for any regional development machinery which may be established.
