HC Deb 13 October 1943 vol 392 cc893-4W
Major Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the East African Governments have now formulated their plans for further settlement by selected Europeans in the post-war period; whether these involve the gradual breakup of the larger undeveloped European estates; and whether statutory power has been taken by each Government to acquire compulsorily suitable land for settlement purposes?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

In Kenya a Settlement Section of the Agricultural Production and Settlement Board has now been set up for the purpose of such planning, but no recommendations by this new section have yet been notified to my right hon. and gallant Friend. A settlement officer has also been appointed to ascertain what areas of Crown land or land already alienated might be made available for further settlement. The matters referred to in the second and third parts of the Question will no doubt be considered in the light of the information so obtained. No schemes have been formulated elsewhere in East Africa for further European settlement.
