HC Deb 12 October 1943 vol 392 c750W
Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether, in view of the recent strikes and loss of output in the coalmining industry as the result of prosecutions and imprisonment for offences that were not punishable before the outbreak of war, he will consider, in conjunction with the Minister of Labour, more humane methods of dealing with such offences so as to avoid these consequences?

Major Lloyd George

Neither my right hon. Friend nor I desire to see miners sent to prison, but if they refuse to pay fines inflicted by the proper legal authorities for breaches of the law I should be interested to know what more human methods my hon. Friend has in mind for dealing with the position.
