§ Mr. Glenvil Hallasked the President of the Board of Trade (1) the amount of British-woven cloth exported to the United States of America in each of the years 1938 to 1942; and the names of the firms in this country now receiving permits for such exports;
(2) whether he has considered the proposal of the United States National Trimmings Association to transfer their Army cloth to Canada pound for pound, if his Department would permit the export of British woollens to the United States of America; and whether he proposes to accept this offer?
§ Mr. JohnstoneParticulars of exports of wool piecegoods to the United States for 1938–39 are given in Volume III of the Annual Statement of Trade for 1939; and particulars for 1940 will be found in the corresponding volume for that year. No later particulars have been published. No new production for export to the United States is now allowed except handwoven tweed. All exporters who exported handwoven tweed to the United States in the eighteen months ended July this year are 1303W receiving an export allocation. No such proposal as that to which my hon. Friend refers has been received, and in any case my right hon. Friend could only entertain a proposal of this kind coming from official sources.
