§ Sir E. Graham-Littleasked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of his appeal to girls not to be deflected from a teaching career, he will amend Circular 1620 to make it possible for universities and colleges to accept for the session 1943–1944 any girl who has obtained a higher school certificate, and has given an undertaking to enter the teaching profession?
§ Mr. ButlerI regret that I am not prepared to modify the terms of Circular 1620, the age limits prescribed in which were arrived at after close consultation with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour and National Service. My appeal to young women, to which the hon. Member refers, was specifically directed to those who are under the prescribed ages. Those who, on account of their age, are required to undertake immediate national service other than teaching or preparation for teaching should have sufficient opportunities of training for the profession after the war.
