HC Deb 11 March 1943 vol 387 c884W
Mr. Dugdale

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it has now been found possible for Chinese students to attend courses both in universities and industrial establishments in this country?

Mr. Law

The British Council, in conjunction with the Universities China Committee, British Universities and the Federation of British Industries, are arranging for a number of Chinese students and industrial apprentices to attend courses in this country. These are being chosen by a selection committee sitting in Chungking, on which the Chinese Government are represented, and are expected to arrive in England during the summer. Sixteen post-graduate research students have been accepted for a year's course at various British universities and 33 apprentices are to be placed in British engineering firms for a two-year course. This does not, however, complete the arrangement and I hope that it may be possible to place further students in other vacancies.
