HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 c910W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the heavy sentences of fines, imprisonment and caning inflicted in the magistrates' courts, Seychelles, upon natives using obscene language and of similar sentences in the supreme court for theft of produce; and whether he will make inquiries, with a view to legislation to alter the powers of these courts?

Colonel Stanley

I have no information about the alleged cases of heavy fines, imprisonment and corporal punishment in the courts in Seychelles, to which my hon. Friend refers. If, however, he will furnish me with particulars of these cases, I will consider whether any inquiry is called for.
