HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 cc924-5W
Mr. Bracewell Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether the bridging of the Severn Estuary is in contemplation in connection with the reorganisation or extension of road or railway facilities; and whether he will consider in conjunction therewith the Severn Barrage Scheme, reported upon favourably by a Select Committee in 1933, with a view to increasing the electrical generating resources of the country in a manner that will not be more costly than coal produced electricity but which will have the advantage, in perpetuity, of conserving the nation's reserves of coal?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir, the question of a Severn crossing is under consideration, and I hope that a practicable scheme will be prepared. If it were decided to construct a barrage, it would certainly be desirable that the barrage should carry a road; but I do not regard the plans for a crossing as necessarily dependent upon a barrage scheme.
