HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 cc902-3W
Lieut.-Commander Tufnell

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the tins containing the petrol supplied to the Army are often of unsatisfactory construction, since they leak and are easily pierced and, when empty, are thrown away as useless; and whether, in the interests of economy, he will arrange for them to be more solidly constructed?

Sir J. Grigg

The 4 gallon non-returnable tin hitherto generally used for the rapid packing and distribution of petrol and oils has been found to be insufficiently robust under certain conditions of transportation and use. It is being gradually superseded by heavy gauge metal returnable packages of various types and the use of the light package is being restricted accordingly and reserved for services for which its construction and design are most suited. The used tins are to a large extent recovered by the salvage organisation for other purposes as well as for scrap metal.
