HC Deb 21 July 1943 vol 391 cc907-8W
Mr. Stephen

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider increasing the allowance of clothing coupons for the next period in view of the fact that people's stocks of clothes which they possessed at the beginning of the rationing are now getting worn out and need replacement, or, alternatively, will he consider allowing a greater allowance to women than to men in view of their greater needs in this respect than men?

Captain Waterhouse

As my right hon. Friend and I have explained on a number of occasions the supply position will allow no increase in the clothing ration in the next period. The size of the ration is at present under consideration, and I hope my right hon. Friend will make an announcement shortly. As regards the second part of the Question, I cannot agree that women need more coupons than men. The coupon rates for the various garments are calculated so as fairly to balance the differing needs of men and women.
