HC Deb 18 February 1943 vol 386 c1955W
Colonel Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture what has been the increase in the numbers of the Women's Land Army since 1st October; whether he is satisfied with the response now being made for new recruits; and whether the Women's Land Army still receives additions through the employment exchanges?

Mr. Hudson

Since 1st October the employed strength of the Women's Land Army has increased from about 49,300 to over 54,000. Since the restriction on recruitment has been relaxed, the enrolment figures have improved each week. Most of the recruits come through the local offices of the Ministry of Labour and National Service. It is too early yet to say whether the response under present conditions will fully meet demand, but on this point I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to my reply to-day to the hon. Member for Morpeth (Mr. R. J. Taylor).
