HC Deb 17 February 1943 vol 386 cc1760-1W
Mr. Wootton-Davies

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he will consider restoring the issue of cheap day tickets on all suburban railways, in view of the fact that the withdrawal of these facilities has resulted in omnibus services being taxed beyond their normal capacity?

Mr. Noel-Baker

According to the evidence which I have received the withdrawal of cheap day fares on the railways has not, in general, led to a transfer of passenger traffic from rail to road. The withdrawal has, however, brought about the reduction in non-essential travel for which we hoped. For that reason, and others, I am afraid it would not be right to adopt my hon. Friend's proposal.
