HC Deb 16 February 1943 vol 386 cc1607-8W
Sir I. Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the method of promotion to non-commissioned and commissioned rank in the War Department Constabulary; and whether full consideration is given to previous police or military experience?

Sir J. Grigg

There are no promotions to commissioned rank, i.e., assistant chief constable, in the War Department Constabulary. Assistant chief constables are appointed direct by the War Office from suitable candidates: promotions to noncommissioned rank are made by the chief constable from lower grades on merits and in the light of recommendations made by local stations. Where possible, candidates selected as suitable for the first step in promotion to police serjeant are subject to an examination in police duties. Consideration is given to previous police or military experience in so far as such experience is regarded as productive of the qualities required in a supervisory rank.
