HC Deb 11 February 1943 vol 386 c1459W
Sir A. Gridley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give an approximate estimate of the probable national expenditure to be provided by the first post-war Budget, assuming the National Debt to be then £20,000,000,000; and what rate of Income Tax would need to be imposed to raise such estimated sum if all taxation was direct?

Sir K. Wood

As I explained in a reply on 21st January to my hon. Friend the Member for South Kensington (Sir W. Davison) the settlement of policy on most important post-war questions has not yet reached a stage at which it is possible to publish estimates of cost. I regret, therefore, that I cannot supply the estimates asked for in the present Question.
