HC Deb 14 December 1943 vol 395 cc1411-2W
Dr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any steps have been taken to secure durable transportable mass radiological sets and trained personnel for use in various colonies; and whether colonies have been requested to place orders immediately for such sets for tubercular investigation?

Colonel Stanley

I am advised that the supply position is such that at the present time it is not possible to arrange for a satisfactory type of mobile unit for use in tropical conditions to be built in this country. It would be premature therefore to make a general request of the kind suggested in the latter part of the Question. The position is, however, being kept under careful review.

Dr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any mass radiology sets have been ordered for the West Indies in order that the real incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis can be ascertained with a view to early diagnosis and treatment and with special reference to the superficial tuberculosis surveys now being undertaken in these colonies?

Colonel Stanley

So far as I am aware no West Indian Government has placed an order in this country for mass radio-graphical sets. An expert officer sent out at the expense of Development and fare funds is now engaged on a tuberculosis survey covering six of these colonies and will doubtless advise the Governments concerned in this matter if he is satisfied that sets suitable to climatic conditions there are obtainable.
