HC Deb 09 December 1943 vol 395 cc1159-60W
Sir W. Smiles

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether all British Consuls in foreign seaports have the responsibility of making certain that survivors from sunken ships of the British Mercantile Marine are given adequate clothing, food and lodging until they can be shipped home; and if it has been made clear to British Consuls in North Africa that they will be reimbursed for the money spent on this assistance?

Mr. George Hall

It is the responsibility of His Majesty's consular officers in foreign ports to make sure that survivors, whether members of the crew or British passengers, from sunken ships of the British Mercantile Marine are provided with a suitable supply of clothing and to make arrangements for their board and lodging until such time as they can continue their journey or be sent home. Undertakings to repay the cost of this assistance are required in the case of passengers. His Majesty's consular officers, including those in North Africa, are authorised to charge in their accounts expenses incurred in connection with the relief of survivors from sunken British ships.
