HC Deb 09 December 1943 vol 395 c1159W
Mr. Rostron Duckworth

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether in view of the certainty that Germany will try to sell abroad art treasures looted from occupied countries, His Majesty's Government will now suggest that the Allies announce that art treasures be taken from Germany to replace thefts of such articles of which she has been guilty on wholesale lines?

Mr. George Hall

While His Majesty's Government will do their best, in accordance with the Inter-Allied Declaration of 5th January, 1943, to defeat methods of dispossession such as those mentioned by my hon. Friend, they cannot, in advance of a general agreement on the principles of restitution, consider earmarking any particular enemy assets to be used in replacement of property which for one reason or another cannot be recovered after the war.
