HC Deb 09 December 1943 vol 395 c1154W
Mr. Ammon

asked the President of the Board of Education what he is doing in the case of a deaf and partially dumb boy for whom there is no special school accommodation in the local school area for whom the local education authority offer residential school accommodation in a special school at a distance from the boy's home, but the parents refuse their consent and meantime the child is not receiving any school education?

Mr. Butler

If the hon. Member will give me particulars of the case he has in mind I will look into it. I am aware that there are many deaf children who are at the present time not receiving any education because their parents refuse to allow them to attend the appropriate residential special school. Where such cases have come to my notice I have asked the authority concerned to explain to the parents how serious it is for the child if his education is interrupted or neglected. If the parent cannot be persuaded to give his consent it is open to the authority to apply to a court of summary jurisdiction under Section 54 of the Education Act, 1921.
