HC Deb 07 December 1943 vol 395 c784W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware of considerable resentment among men of the Merchant Navy arising from Income Tax being levied on war risk money, including shipwreck pay and shipwreck leave pay; and whether consideration can be given to this grievance with a view to its removal?

Mr. Assheton

I would refer my hon. Friend to the replies given by the late Chancellor of the Exchequer to the hon. and gallant Member for Ayr Burghs (Sir T. Moore) on 9th February last and to the hon. Member for Maldon (Mr. Driberg) on 13th April last. It would not he possible to discriminate in favour of a particular type of earnings by reference to the risk or hardship attached to the circumstances in which they are earned.
