HC Deb 04 August 1943 vol 391 c2310W
Major Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what money grant has been made to cover the cost of establishing an institute of West African arts, industries and social science; where the funds for this purpose have been obtained; and whether he will consider setting up a similar institute for the East African Colonies?

Colonel Stanley

A scheme has been approved under the Colonial Development and Welfare Act for the establishment of an Institute of West African Arts, Industries and Social Science, and a grant of £127,000 is being provided under the Act to meet the expenses of the first five years from the establishment of the Institute. Conditions in East Africa are, of course, different, but I hope that the development of Makerere as a centre of the East African arts and of social studies will enable similar progress to be made.
