HC Deb 03 August 1943 vol 391 c2097W
Mr. David Adams

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the demonstration exhibition of "Mend and make do," held in Newcastle recently, took place at approximately 10.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., at which hours many working women could not attend; and will he arrange otherwise in future demonstrations?

Mr. Dalton

This exhibition was held in a retail store and was, therefore, open only during shopping hours. Voluntary helpers attended from To a.m. to 5 p.m. each day to give practical advice, but, owing to the shortage of staff, demonstrations could be held only twice a day—at 11.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. I am in touch with the Newcastle education authority regarding further demonstrations in the city, and will bear my hon. Friend's suggestion in mind.
