HC Deb 09 September 1942 vol 383 c166W
Mr. Parker

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty why 10,000 merchant ships are being constructed with only one engine instead of two; and why he is content with a speed of 10 knots when 15 knots are necessary to evade submarines?

Mr. Alexander

Single screw standard ships of 10,000 tons deadweight, and speed of 11 to 12 knots are the most economical in material, man-power, and carrying capacity. Vessels of this speed sail in escorted convoys.
