HC Deb 08 September 1942 vol 383 c62W
Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for War for what acts whipping or flogging is a punishment inflicted upon British or Colonial troops; and whether any records of the infliction of this punishment overseas are received by his Department?

Sir J. Grigg

British military law does not provide for the award of a sentence of flogging. I am advised that in the past flogging could be awarded by commanding officers as a summary punishment to soldiers of the Royal West African Frontier Force and the King's African Rifles, but that under the ordinances now in force flogging cannot be awarded except by courts-martial, which are of course convened to deal with serious offences only. The answer to the second part of the Question is, "No, Sir."
