Mr. Pritt

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food, approximately, how many meals are now served weekly in private catering establishments, in canteens and British Restaurants, respectively; how many of the meals served in private catering establishments are, respectively, served in workmen's cafés and transport cafés, in establishments catering mainly for black-coated workers, and in hotels and restaurants where the average charge per meal is 3s. 6d. or over; and how many workmen's cafés and transport cafés are now at work?

In reply to the first part of the Question the latest statistics of meals (including breakfasts, main meals, subsidiary meals and tea) served in catering establishments are as follow:

Per week.
Private catering establishments 62,000,000
Canteens 44,500,000
British Restaurants 2,000,000

In reply to the second and third parts of the Question I regret the figures are not available.
