HC Deb 21 October 1942 vol 383 c1996W
Mr. Salt

asked the Secretary of State for War how many journalists are serving in the Army; whether any attempt has been made to use their experience and ability to record events as official correspondente on active service and thereby present a more comprehensive picture to the public at home of the Army's achievements in the war?

Mr. A. Henderson

Official correspondents are not employed in any theatre of war. The practice of the War Office is to provide facilities for accredited independent correspondents of the newspapers and news agencies to cover the operations of our troops. These correspondents are conducted and assisted in their work by the Army Public Relations Service in which there are a number of journalists serving. I am afraid that the figures of the total number of journalists serving in the Army are not available and could not be obtained without a disproportionate amount of time and labour.
