§ Mr. Gallacherasked the Secretary of State for India whether, in order to assist British opinion in forming an estimate of the relative weight of political organisations in India, he will furnish the figures of the total aggregate votes at the last 1937 elections of the National Congress, the Moslem League and other important political organisations in India?
§ Mr. AmeryThe aggregate figures desired by the hon. Member are not in the possession of the Government of India. They would have to be collected by the several Provinces with an expenditure of time and labour which would not be justified at the present time. Nearly 1,800 constituencies are concerned; it is doubtful if the complete election returns are still available in every case; and in any event the result would afford no reliable guide to the present relative position of the political parties.
